Warbugia Ugandensis (East African Greenheart / Muharaka)

Warbugia ugandensis, known as East African Greenheart, Pepper Bark Tree, or Muharaka in Kikuyu, is a remarkable, medium-sized evergreen tree that is one of the most medicinally important trees in East Africa. All parts of the tree — bark, leaves, and roots — possess potent antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-malarial properties, and it is widely used in traditional medicine across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. As a landscape tree, it is a dense, neat, handsome evergreen with aromatic, pointed leaves that smell peppery when crushed. It is well-adapted to highland conditions and makes an excellent, multifunctional specimen tree for conservation-minded gardens.
