Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) is an iconic African aquatic sedge native to Kenya and widely found along the margins of Lake Victoria and Lake Naivasha. It features dramatic, tall triangular stems rising from robust rhizomes, each topped with a magnificent feather-duster crown of thin, bright-green, thread-like rays. In ideal conditions it can reach 4–5 metres in height, providing stunning vertical architectural interest to pond landscapes and water gardens. Beyond its ornamental appeal, it acts as a natural biofilter, improving water quality, and provides valuable habitat for frogs, dragonflies, and birds. Best planted in shallow water with full sun; contain in pots to manage spread in smaller ponds.
