Pest Control in Nairobi: A Comprehensive Guide to Protecting Your Home, Garden and Business

Kenya's warm climate and urban green spaces create ideal conditions for a wide range of pest species to thrive — and to move from the garden into your home, restaurant, or office. Unlike temperate climates where winter provides a natural pest die-off cycle, Nairobi's moderate year-round temperatures mean pest populations can maintain themselves continuously, and a small infestation can escalate to a serious problem within weeks. This guide covers the most common pest species encountered in Nairobi homes and businesses — their biology, the damage they cause, how to identify an active infestation, and what effective treatment looks like.

Termites: The Silent Destroyer

Of all the pest species we treat, termites cause by far the most severe structural damage — and they do it invisibly and silently over months or years. By the time most homeowners notice a termite infestation, significant damage has already occurred. In Kenya, the dominant species causing structural damage are subterranean termites (primarily Macrotermes michaelseni and Odontotermes species), which build their colonies in the soil and travel to above-ground food sources through sealed mud tubes constructed along foundation walls, inside wall cavities, and through cracks in concrete slabs.

Signs of Active Termite Infestation

  • Mud tubes: Pencil-thin brown tubes running along exterior walls, inside cupboards, behind skirting boards, or up foundation walls. These are termite highways — sealed galleries that maintain the humidity and darkness termites require.
  • Swarming alates: Flying termites (winged reproductive termites) appearing in large numbers around light sources, typically after the first rains of a new season. Finding swarming termites inside your house is a strong indicator of an established colony.
  • Hollow-sounding timber: Tap wooden elements — door frames, window sills, floor joists, roof purlins — with a screwdriver handle. Termite-damaged wood sounds hollow because the interior has been consumed while the outer surface remains intact.
  • Frass: Fine, sandy or crystalline material found in small piles beneath timber. This is termite excrement, pushed out of galleries as the colony feeds.
  • Sagging floors or distorted door frames: Advanced infestation that has compromised structural elements.

Termite Treatment Methods

Effective termite treatment requires treating both the active infestation and its source — the soil-based colony. Two approaches are used, often in combination:

  • Soil Treatment (Pre-Construction): The most effective termite protection is a chemical soil barrier applied before the concrete slab is poured. We apply a termiticide (typically imidacloprid or bifenthrin-based, PCPB-registered) to the excavated ground surface, floor edges, and backfilled soil around foundations. This creates a long-lasting toxic zone that termites cannot cross without lethal exposure.
  • Post-Construction Soil Injection: For existing structures, we drill 12 mm injection holes at 300–500 mm centres around the perimeter of the building (both interior and exterior), inject termiticide solution under pressure into the soil, and seal the holes. This re-establishes a chemical barrier in the soil without requiring excavation.
  • Direct Wood Treatment: Exposed roof timbers, floor joists, and furniture can be treated by brushing or spraying with wood-penetrating insecticide. This kills active termites in the wood and provides residual protection.
  • Baiting Systems: For environmentally sensitive locations, bait stations containing cellulose-based bait mixed with slow-acting insect growth regulators are installed in the soil around the structure. Foraging termites carry the bait back to the colony, where it spreads through trophallaxis (food-sharing behaviour) and eventually collapses the colony.

Pre-Construction Termite Protection is Non-Negotiable

If you are building a new home or extension in Nairobi, insist on a pre-construction termite soil treatment before the foundation slab is poured. The cost is minimal at this stage — typically KES 15,000–40,000 depending on footprint — but saves tens or hundreds of thousands of shillings in future remediation costs. Ask your contractor to show you the PCPB-registered product being used and get the treatment certificate for your records.

Cockroaches: Kenya's Most Common Household Pest

Three cockroach species are commonly encountered in Nairobi homes and businesses: the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), and the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis). The German cockroach is the most problematic — it breeds extremely rapidly (a single female can produce 300–400 offspring in her lifetime), prefers the warm and humid microhabitats found behind kitchen appliances and under sinks, and has developed resistance to many commonly available insecticides. The American cockroach is larger, slower to breed, and more commonly found in sewers, drains, and outdoor areas, migrating inside through drains and plumbing penetrations.

Why Over-the-Counter Sprays Fail

The supermarket-shelf insecticide sprays used by most Nairobi homeowners have three fundamental limitations: first, they provide only contact kill — they kill cockroaches they touch, but have no residual effect on the cockroach population hiding in wall cavities, under appliances, and behind cupboard linings. Second, they drive the population into deeper hiding, making subsequent treatments less effective. Third, German cockroach populations have widespread pyrethroid resistance (the chemical family used in most consumer sprays). The result is the perpetual cat-and-mouse experience most people report: spray, get a day's relief, cockroaches return.

Professional Cockroach Treatment

The gold standard professional treatment for German cockroach infestations is gel bait application. Gel baits contain a slow-acting insecticide (typically indoxacarb or imidacloprid) combined with a highly attractive food matrix. Cockroaches consume the gel, return to the harbourage, and die — but crucially, other cockroaches that consume the bodies or faeces of poisoned cockroaches are also killed through secondary poisoning. This cascading kill mechanism eliminates the entire population, including those deep in wall voids, within 2–4 weeks. For heavy infestations, we supplement gel bait with crack-and-crevice injection of insecticidal dust (diatomaceous earth or a pyrethrin-based dust) into wall voids, under appliances, and behind skirtings.

Bedbugs: The Nocturnal Blood-Feeder

Bedbug infestations have increased significantly across Nairobi over the past decade, driven by increased domestic travel, secondhand furniture trade, and urban density. Cimex lectularius (the common bedbug) is a 4–5 mm flat, reddish-brown insect that feeds exclusively on human blood, predominantly between midnight and dawn when the host is in deep sleep. It does not spread disease directly, but its bites cause intense itching, allergic reactions, secondary skin infections from scratching, and severe psychological distress — insomnia, anxiety, and social withdrawal in badly infested households.

How to Confirm a Bedbug Infestation

  • Blood spotting on bed linen — small brown or rusty spots from crushed bugs or faecal droppings.
  • Cast skins — pale yellow translucent shells shed as nymphs develop through five growth stages.
  • Live bugs visible at seam junctions of mattresses, in cracks of bed frames, behind headboards.
  • A characteristic sweet, musty odour in heavily infested rooms.
  • Bite pattern: multiple bites in a line or cluster on exposed skin (neck, arms, legs).

Bedbug Treatment Protocol

Bedbugs are among the most difficult pests to eradicate because they hide in tiny crevices, lay eggs in inaccessible locations, and can survive without feeding for up to a year in cool conditions. Effective treatment requires a combination of physical preparation, chemical application, and follow-up inspection.

  • Pre-treatment preparation: All bedding removed and laundered at 60°C. Mattress covers sealed. Clutter reduced. Wardrobes emptied.
  • Chemical treatment: Application of a non-repellent residual insecticide (we use PCPB-registered pyrethroids + synergist formulations) to all mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboard, skirting boards, behind switches, and inside wardrobes. Non-repellent chemistry is critical — repellent formulas scatter the population and extend the infestation.
  • Mattress encasement: After treatment, quality zippered mattress encasements trap any surviving bugs inside, where they eventually die, while preventing re-colonisation from outside.
  • 14-day follow-up inspection: We revisit to confirm eradication and apply a second round if any live bugs or eggs are found.

Rodents: Rats and Mice in Nairobi

Three rodent species cause the majority of problems in Nairobi properties: the roof rat (Rattus rattus), the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), and the house mouse (Mus musculus). Roof rats are agile climbers that inhabit ceilings, roof voids, and tree canopy, accessing buildings through ventilation gaps, broken fascia boards, and open water tank covers. Norway rats are larger, burrow in garden soil and compost heaps, and enter buildings through drains and low-level gaps in foundations. House mice can squeeze through a gap as small as 6 mm and establish rapidly in kitchen areas.

  • Damage caused: Gnawing through electrical cables (a major fire risk), contaminating food stores, nesting in insulation materials, damaging roof timbers.
  • Health risk: Leptospirosis (spread through rat urine in water or soil), Hantavirus, Salmonella from contaminated food surfaces.
  • Control: A combination of rodenticide bait blocks (second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides in tamper-resistant lockable bait stations) for population reduction, plus physical exclusion — sealing all entry points with wire mesh, expanding foam, and steel wool.

Mosquitoes: Control in and Around Your Garden

Nairobi at altitude has lower Anopheles (malaria-carrying) mosquito pressure than the coast or lakeside regions, but Aedes mosquitoes — vectors for dengue fever and chikungunya — have become a significant urban health concern. Aedes breeds in very small quantities of standing water: flower pot saucers, tyres, clogged drains, blocked gutters, and decorative water features. Mosquito control in Nairobi must address both the adult population (ULV fogging) and the breeding sources (environmental management).

  • ULV (Ultra-Low Volume) fogging: Fine mist of dilute insecticide applied to vegetation and shaded areas in gardens at dusk. Kills adult mosquitoes on contact with immediate effect. Effects last 2–3 weeks.
  • Larviciding: Application of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) biological larvicide or insect growth regulators to standing water bodies that cannot be eliminated (ornamental ponds, animal watering troughs). Kills larvae without affecting non-target wildlife.
  • Environmental management: Removing all standing water sources from the garden — the single most effective long-term control measure.
