Cabro Paving in Kenya: The Complete Homeowner's Guide to Driveways, Walkways and Courtyards
Cabro blocks are Kenya's most popular paving solution — and the most frequently installed incorrectly. We explain everything: block types, sub-base requirements, patterns, cost, and how to spot a properly laid driveway from a bad one.
Drive into any upmarket estate in Nairobi — Karen, Runda, Rosslyn, Lavington, Nyari — and the dominant driveway surface is almost always cabro block paving. Cabro has become Kenya's de facto premium paving material for good reason: it is durable, visually versatile, drainable, repairable (individual blocks can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the whole surface), and when installed properly, it lasts 20–30 years. When installed incorrectly — which happens far more often than it should — it waves, sinks, separates, and becomes a maintenance headache within two to three rainy seasons. This guide tells you everything you need to know to buy smart, specify correctly, and recognise the difference between a quality installation and a poor one.
What Are Cabro Blocks? A Technical Introduction
Cabro (derived from the Spanish 'Calicanto', referring to lime-based masonry) in the Kenyan context refers to concrete interlocking paving blocks — individual cast-concrete units laid in a sand bedding layer over a compacted aggregate sub-base. Cabro blocks are manufactured by vibro-pressing dry concrete mix under high pressure and vibration into moulds. The resulting block has a smooth or textured top surface, chamfered edges that create the characteristic joint lines, and dimensional precision that allows the interlocking pattern to distribute load across multiple blocks simultaneously.
Cabro Block Types and Specifications
By Thickness: 50 mm, 60 mm, and 80 mm
Block thickness is the most important structural specification — it determines what loading the paving can handle without cracking or deforming. This is how we specify:
- 50 mm: Pedestrian pathways, garden walkways, pool surrounds. Not suitable for vehicles.
- 60 mm: Standard residential driveways serving private cars and light SUVs (axle loads up to 3 tonnes). The most common specification for Nairobi homes.
- 80 mm: Required for driveways with frequent truck access, commercial parking areas, service yards, and heavy vehicle circulation. Axle loads up to 10 tonnes.
By Shape: Holland, Uni, Rectangular, and Specialty Shapes
The most common shape in Kenya is the Holland block — a rectangular block approximately 200×100 mm in plan with a slight wave to the longer sides that creates mechanical interlock between adjacent blocks. Uni blocks are rectangular (200×100 mm) with flat sides and rely on the joint sand for interlock. Both are widely available and perform similarly when installed correctly. Specialty shapes — hexagonal, fan, and curved blocks — are available for premium applications but carry a cost premium and require more skilled setting-out.
By Colour: Grey, Charcoal, Terracotta, Red, and Buff
Cabro blocks are pigmented during manufacture using iron oxide colourants. Grey and charcoal are the most popular in Nairobi — they are neutral, age gracefully, and complement both modern and traditional architectural styles. Terracotta and red offer a warmer, more Mediterranean character and are popular in Karen-style homes with clay tile roofs. Buff and cream tones work well in formal colonial-style buildings. A practical note: colour fades gradually over years of UV exposure and traffic. The fade is even and natural-looking on quality blocks, but can be blotchy on lower-quality blocks with inconsistent pigment mixing.
The Sub-Base: The Hidden Foundation Everything Else Depends On
Here is the most important thing we tell every client: the cabro block itself is the least important part of the paving system. What matters most is what goes beneath it. A high-quality block laid on a poorly prepared sub-base will fail. A standard-grade block laid on a correctly prepared sub-base will perform well for decades. Here is what a correctly specified sub-base looks like:
- Excavation: Remove soft topsoil to a minimum depth of 250–350 mm (for a 60 mm block driveway). This depth is non-negotiable — insufficient depth is the most common cause of driveway failure.
- Sub-base Material: Fill excavation with crushed stone (murram or quarry hardcore) in layers of 100–150 mm, compacting each layer with a vibrating plate compactor or roller before adding the next.
- Compaction Standard: Achieve at least 95% Modified Proctor Density (Dmax) compaction. We check this with a DCP (Dynamic Cone Penetrometer) test for large commercial jobs.
- Blinding Layer: A 50 mm layer of crusher dust (stone dust) over the compacted sub-base to create a level, even surface for the bedding sand.
- Bedding Sand: 30–50 mm of clean, sharp-washed concrete sand (not builder's sand, which is too fine). This layer is screeded flat using aluminium rails and allows minor adjustments during block laying.
- Blocks and Joint Sand: Cabro blocks are laid to pattern, compacted with a vibrating plate compactor (with a rubber pad to protect block faces), and jointed with kiln-dried silica sand brushed into the joints.
How to Spot a Bad Cabro Installation
Ask the contractor: 'What depth are you excavating to and what compaction method are you using?' If they cannot answer clearly — or if they propose skipping the sub-base compaction step to save time — walk away. Common signs of poor work: blocks rocking when you step on them immediately after laying; no visible mechanical compactor used; blocks laid directly on soil or on a single thin layer of sand; no kerbs or edge restraints installed around the perimeter.
Laying Patterns: Aesthetics and Structural Implications
The pattern in which cabro blocks are laid is partly aesthetic and partly structural. Certain patterns provide superior interlock and load distribution:
- Running Bond (Stretcher Bond): The simplest pattern — blocks laid in straight rows with staggered joints. Easy to set out, efficient to install. Structurally adequate for pedestrian areas and light traffic.
- Herringbone (45° or 90°): The strongest structural pattern. Each block is locked by four neighbouring blocks, creating a genuinely interlocked system that distributes wheel loads across a wider area. Recommended for all driveways. The 45° herringbone pattern also has the visual effect of making a space feel wider.
- Basketweave: Pairs of blocks alternated in a checkerboard pattern. Primarily decorative — lower structural performance than herringbone. Use only for garden terraces and pedestrian areas.
- Fan / Radial: Semi-circular fans radiating from a central point. Dramatic centrepiece for circular driveways and courtyard entrances. Requires precise setting-out and skilled installation.
Edging and Drainage: The Details That Determine Longevity
No cabro paving installation is complete without proper edge restraints. Without kerbs or concrete haunching along every free edge of the paving, the blocks at the perimeter will gradually migrate outward under traffic load, causing the joint pattern to open up and the surface to deform. We always install either pre-cast concrete kerb units (150×150×1000 mm) or a concrete haunch (a 100 mm wide, 150 mm deep strip of concrete cast against the last row of blocks) at every free edge. Where cabro paving meets an existing boundary wall, we cast a fillet of concrete against the wall face before laying the adjacent block courses.
Drainage must be designed alongside the paving layout, not as an afterthought. We set out all paving to a minimum 1.5% crossfall (15 mm per metre of width) to ensure rainwater runs off the surface to a designated collection point — either a surface channel drain, a catch basin, or a permeable gravel strip at the boundary.
